Abstract Japan
Title: Abstract Japan
Year: 2026
Material: Epoxy resin, pigments, MDF, aluminum, wooden frame
Dimensions: 129 × 67 × 3 cm
Abstract Japan is inspired by the simple yet powerful design of the Japanese flag Nisshōki. At the center of the work is a strong red circle that clearly references the iconic sun symbol. Surrounding it is an energetic composition of flowing lines, splashes, and layered colors that break the strict symmetry of the original symbol.
The artwork combines structure and spontaneity. The red circle creates a calm visual center, while dynamic lines in white, green, yellow, and black move across the surface in different directions. Gold pigments and glitter add depth and light reflections, making the piece change slightly depending on the viewing angle.
The composition lives from contrast: order and chaos, simplicity and complexity, tradition and experimentation. The clear geometric form of the circle meets expressive gestures and fluid movements created by the epoxy resin.
In this way, abstract Japan can be understood as a reinterpretation of a familiar symbol. It keeps the recognizable reference to the Japanese flag but transforms it into a lively and contemporary visual language.
